DNP's Commitment to Compliance with Thermal Transfer Ribbon Solutions

Many industries require compliance with national and international regulations to ensure the safety, traceability, and durability of product labels. This article explores these compliance-driven standards and DNP's commitment to supporting them with our thermal transfer ribbon solutions.

BS5609
BS5609 is a durability specification for chemical drum labels designed for maritime environments, specifically those exposed to prolonged saltwater immersion and abrasion.

To achieve BS5609 approval, a two-part test is conducted by an independent, third-party laboratory:
  • Testing the adhesion and durability of the blank label material.
  • Evaluating the print permanence of the printed label.
Successful completion of both tests allows a specific ribbon and material to be recognized as compliant with BS5609 specifications when used together.

It's important to note that ink alone does not meet BS5609 compliance.

Halogen-free
Halogens are a group of chemical elements that include fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. Halogenated compounds are utilized for cabling insulation and electrical components due to their relatively low cost and abundance of raw materials. When contained in electronics, halogens do not pose a risk to human health or the environment. However, they can become hazardous during a fire involving electronic devices or after the disposal of electronic equipment.

DNP recognizes the impact that halogen-containing products have on the electronics industry. As a result, we are committed to continuously updating our formulations to meet current market demands.

REACH
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European regulation to protect human health and the environment by managing chemical risks. It applies to all chemical substances used in both industrial and everyday products. DNP certifies that we do not intentionally use any of the substances on the ECHA Candidate List in the production of our thermal transfer ribbons. In accordance with REACH regulations, DNP actively monitors updates to this list and will inform consumers if any future products contain substances exceeding the 0.1% threshold.

RoHS
The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive, adopted by the European Union on July 1, 2006, limits the use of six hazardous substances, including certain heavy metals, PBBs, and PBDEs, in electrical and electronic products sold within the EU. With a few exceptions, this regulation effectively bans these substances to protect human health and the environment.

RoHS applies to both printers and thermal transfer ribbons (TTR). DNP ensures that all our thermal transfer ribbons are free from the hazardous substances listed under RoHS, offering customers peace of mind. For additional assurance, we provide a Restriction of Hazardous Substances Conformance Declaration upon request.
