DNP’s Clean Thermal Transfer Ribbons Qualify for Recycling Program

04/20/18

With 85% of label industry waste being sent to landfills each year, DNP is proud to produce a line of clean thermal transfer ribbons that meet stringent requirements for recycling. DNP thermal transfer ribbons are halogen-free. Unlike other thermal transfer ribbons on the market, DNP products can be recycled because they do not contain harmful chemical elements that release toxins and corrosives when incinerated.

Organizations like Convergen Energy and Pellet America convert non-recyclables like label matrix and TTR into fuel pellets that can be used as alternative energy. Many paper, printing, converting, and label companies, like DNP’s partner Heartland Label Printers, utilize these services.

“Since we launched our recycle stream program in 2017, we have had excellent response from customers,” says Jamie Hillend, Heartland Label Printers’ Executive Director of Sales & Marketing. “We have implemented local, regional and national programs to recycle label and ribbon waste and convert it into fuel pellets. This helps customers keep label and ribbon waste from going to landfill. The use of DNP’s halogen-free ribbons certainly helps make this program possible and efficient.”

Feedstocks, which are largely polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, nylon, paper and adhesives from labels, are sampled and tested prior to approval for use. In addition to DNP’s halogen-free thermal transfer ribbons, accepted materials include plastics, coated papers, waxed corrugates, construction paper, and pressure sensitive labels.

The resulting pellets are burned in a boiler to produce steam which powers a turbine to generate electricity, replacing coal, gas, and other fossil fuels at universities, paper mills, prisons, power plants and utility companies. This cost-effective, cleaner alternative significantly reduces air emissions and is classified as a non-waste fuel by the EPA. Heartland Label Printers alone is replacing 140 tons of coal with these pellets each year.
